Emergency Exit Doors NFPA requires that each exit must be clearly visible and marked by a sign reading "EXIT." Additionally, the exit route door must not have decorations or signs that block the visibility of the exit. Finally, any door that could be mistaken for an exit must be marked "NOT AN EXIT" or labeled with a sign that states its actual use, for example "Coat Closet." Doors must also swing outward, not inward. Requirements for Emergency Exit Signs All exit signs must have the word "Exit" in letters not less than 6 inches in height with letters 3/4 inches wide. When it is not apparent where the nearest exit is, a sign with an arrow pointing the exit is required. Every exit sign must be illuminated from a reliable source and must be battery-powered in case the electricity is cut off. Emergency Exit Sign Illumination The surface of an emergency exit sign must have an illuminated surface of not less than 5-foot candles that is visible in both emergency and non-emergency modes. Emergency Exit Light Requirements Not all buildings are required to have emergency exit lighting, so it is best to check local municipal building codes. If emergency illumination is required, it must work for at least 1 1/2 hours in the event of electrical failure or any other interruption of normal lighting. The emergency exit light requirements indicate that the emergency exit path must provide initial illumination of not less than an average of 1-foot candle with a minimum at any point being 0.1-foot candle. Additionally, the illumination cannot exceed more than 40 times the minimum lighting at any one point to prevent blindingly bright spots. Blocking Emergency Exits It is unlawful to ever block an emergency exit or permanently lock an exit door. A door may be fitted with an alarm that will sound when the door is opened, but the door must still be easily opened in case of an emergency the emergency lights and get out to direct traffic. | |
